The Historical Heritage of Mersin

Being one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites is located in Erdemli district of Mersin. Kızkalesi, which contributes greatly to the city’s tourism, offers its visitors both nature and history at the same time.

Built on a small island 200 meters from the coast is built with 8 towers supporting the castle and resembles the castle you see in the movies. It is 192 metres long and was once named Korykos. It is hard to find a place to walk in the summer due to being so crowded. At night, on the other hand, you can enjoy the castle from a distance thanks to its solar-powered light show.

As visitors walk along the castle walls and other areas they can see traces of the Seleucids, Romans, Byzantines, Seljuks, Armenians, Kingdom of Cyprus, Karamanoğulları and Ottomans. Approximately 1 million people visit every year.

More foreign tourists are visiting every year

Mehmet Şirin Öztop, the president of the Kızkalesi tourism foundation, said that many visitors are coming to see our castle, but we have noticed the number of foreign tourists has also increased significantly. It looks like our efforts to introduce touristic areas in turkey has paid off at the fairs.

The Village of Rocks, Kayaköy If you pass Hisarönü Village and walk 5 km further through the pines, you will see the dream village. The name of this place is Kayakoy. Towards the hillside, this village was an old Greek settlement, consisting of hundreds of houses lined up respectfully, one not disturbing the other. As the Greeks were good agriculturists, they would not build a house on the farmland. The houses were built on rocky, stony areas. Twenty-five thousand people lived in the village until 1922. Fishermen's Labyrinth This area known by fishermen in Mugla come here and watch the fish and Caretta Caretta swim. This place has become so popular that some fisherman has quit their jobs to become a tour guide and take tourists to this site. Within the districts of Ortanca and Koyceyiz in Mugla, has many small paths due to green life growing from the water.
